Our Methodology

Our AI governance assessment methodology is built on five core principles: independence, evidence-based assessment, risk-based approach, Australian context, and practical implementation. We assess across six governance domains: strategy and accountability, risk management, data governance, model governance, transparency and explainability, and monitoring and review.

Governance Framework

Our governance framework is designed for Australian organisations deploying AI systems. It provides structured guidance across all critical governance domains while remaining flexible enough to adapt to your specific context.

Framework Components

  • Governance Structure: Board oversight, executive accountability, governance committees
  • Risk Management: Risk assessment processes, mitigation strategies, incident response
  • Data Governance: Data quality, privacy protection, security controls
  • Model Governance: Development standards, validation processes, change management
  • Operational Controls: Monitoring systems, performance metrics, audit trails
  • Transparency: Documentation standards, explainability requirements, stakeholder communication

Ethics and Independence

Independence is fundamental to our assessment process. We maintain strict separation from consulting services, technology vendors, and commercial interests that could compromise our assessments.

Our Independence Commitments

  • No commercial relationships with assessed organisations beyond the assessment engagement
  • Assessors have no financial interest in assessment outcomes
  • Transparent methodology available for public review
  • Regular external audits of our assessment processes
  • Clear complaints and appeals procedures

Priority Sectors

We focus on sectors where AI risk exposure and regulatory scrutiny are highest:

Healthcare

Financial Services

AI in lending, fraud detection, and investment decisions faces intense regulatory scrutiny and poses significant liability risks.

Government

AI in public services, law enforcement, and decision-making must balance efficiency with fairness, transparency, and accountability.

Resources

We provide comprehensive resources to help Australian organisations understand and implement AI governance:

  • Australian Government AI Ethics Principles
  • NIST AI Risk Management Framework
  • EU AI Act Overview
  • ISO/IEC AI Standards
  • Industry-specific AI guidance
  • AI governance templates and checklists

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AI governance readiness assessment?

An AI governance readiness assessment is an independent evaluation process that confirms an organisation has implemented appropriate policies, controls, and accountability structures for responsible AI deployment.

Why do organisations need AI governance?

AI governance helps organisations reduce board and executive liability, meet procurement requirements, manage insurance exposure, protect reputation, and address increasing regulatory scrutiny.

What are the risks of not implementing AI governance?

Without proper AI governance, organisations face board and executive liability, procurement rejection, increased insurance costs, reputational damage, and regulatory enforcement action.

How long does an AI governance assessment take?

Timeline varies based on assessment level: Early Stage (4-6 weeks), Operational (6-8 weeks), Full Governance (8-12 weeks).

What assessment level do I need?

Choose Early Stage for initial AI use, Operational for AI in production, or Full Governance for high-risk AI deployments.

Is AIGC government-affiliated?

No, we are an independent organisation. While we align with Australian Government AI guidance, we maintain complete independence.

Independent Governance Assessment

Independent evaluation of AI governance maturity informed by Australia's AI Ethics Principles.

What is the AIGC Australia governance assessment?

The AIGC governance assessment provides independent evaluation of governance oversight structures against AIGC's published governance framework.

Assessment demonstrates to boards, stakeholders, customers, and procurement teams that your organisation has implemented robust governance frameworks and maintains accountability for AI system outcomes.

AIGC does not design, build, or implement AI systems. We provide independent governance assessment only.

Assessment levels

The AIGC governance assessment confirms the maturity of governance oversight, based on documented evidence and structured evaluation. Assessment does not constitute regulatory approval and does not evaluate AI system performance.

Level 1

Early Stage

Informal oversight with limited documentation and limited integration into enterprise risk and control structures.

Level 2

Developing

Governance structures established and partially embedded, with emerging accountability, risk integration, and oversight processes.

Level 3

Formalised

Board approved governance framework, integrated controls, documented oversight cadence, and evidence of independent review.

Assessment level reflects governance maturity and not technical performance of AI systems.

The assessment process

1

Initial engagement

Contact AIGC Australia to discuss your governance assessment objectives. We conduct an initial consultation to understand your AI systems, current governance practices, and specific requirements.

This stage establishes the scope of assessment and confirms mutual understanding of expectations. This consultation does not constitute advisory services unless separately engaged.

2

Documentation submission

You provide comprehensive documentation of your AI systems, governance frameworks, policies, procedures, and relevant evidence of implementation.

Required documentation typically includes system descriptions, risk assessments, governance policies, accountability structures, and monitoring processes.

3

Independent assessment

AIGC Australia assessors conduct a thorough review of your submitted materials, evaluating governance practices against AIGC's published governance criteria.

Assessment includes review of documentation, evaluation of processes, and verification of accountability mechanisms.

4

Board-level reporting and maturity determination

We provide detailed findings from the assessment, including identified strengths, areas requiring attention, and observations regarding areas for governance strengthening where applicable.

If gaps are identified, organisations may address these and request reassessment before the final assessment outcome is determined.

5

Governance uplift roadmap and ongoing guidance

Assessment outcomes are determined by AIGC's Review Panel following independent review. Organisations receive a governance uplift roadmap identifying prioritised actions aligned to their maturity level, along with formal assessment documentation and usage rights for the AIGC Australia assessment verification mark.

The assessment is valid for twelve months from the date of issuance. The governance uplift roadmap provides a structured pathway toward the next maturity level.

What you receive

Board-level governance report

Comprehensive governance assessment report detailing assessment methodology, findings, maturity determination, identified strengths, and prioritised recommendations suitable for board and executive-level review.

The report includes assessment scope, system details, maturity level determination, and a unique assessment reference number.

Assessment verification mark

Rights to use the AIGC Australia assessment verification mark in appropriate contexts, subject to assessment terms and conditions.

The mark may be used on websites, marketing materials, and in communications with stakeholders during the assessment validity period.

Governance uplift roadmap

A structured, prioritised roadmap of governance improvement actions tailored to your organisation's current maturity level and aligned to the next assessment tier.

The roadmap supports internal governance planning and provides a clear pathway toward strengthened oversight.

Ongoing guidance

Access to guidance on maintaining assessment status, addressing governance questions, and preparing for annual reassessment. Guidance is general in nature and does not constitute advisory services.

We provide clear communication about requirements and expectations throughout the assessment period.

Assessment validity and renewal

Twelve-month validity period

The AIGC Australia governance assessment is valid for twelve months from the date of issuance. This period recognises that both AI systems and governance practices evolve, requiring regular reassessment to maintain assessment currency.

Annual renewal process

Approximately sixty days before assessment expiry, AIGC Australia will contact you to initiate the renewal process. Renewal involves reassessment of your governance practices to confirm continued conformity with AIGC governance criteria.

The renewal process follows similar steps to initial assessment but may be streamlined based on demonstrated governance maturity and continuity.

Update review requirements

Assessment is granted for specific AI systems and governance arrangements. Material changes to assessed systems require update reviews to maintain assessment validity.

Changes requiring update review include:

  • Significant changes to AI system functionality or capabilities
  • Changes to data sources, types, or processing methods
  • New deployment contexts or user populations
  • Material changes to governance structures or processes

Organisations must notify AIGC Australia of material changes and arrange update assessments to maintain assessment status.
